Handwash Basin / Sink / Trough Installation Guide
Introduction
Our handwash installation guide outlines the steps involved to install a handwash basin or wash trough, ensuring proper setup for safe and efficient use in commercial or industrial environments. The installation guide will give you a generic overview of the process involved to install one of Washware Essentials handwash units.
Materials Needed:
- Basin, sink or wash trough
- Mounting brackets (if required)
- Silicone sealant (if applicable)
- Appropriate screws, anchors, and wall fasteners to suit your wall type
Tools and Equipment:
- Drill with appropriate drill bits
- Tape measure
- Level
- Pencil or marker for measurements
- Adjustable pipe spanner
- Pipe cutter
- Screw drivers
- Plumber's tape
- Safety gear (gloves, goggles)
- Silicone sealant (optional)
Step 1: Preparation
- Select the Installation Location:
- Ensure the location is easily accessible and complies with local plumbing regulations and all applicable health and safety recommendations.
- Confirm the space can accommodate the handwash item, users and all necessary plumbing connections.
- Check the Plumbing Setup:
- Ensure cold and hot water supply lines are within range of the handwash installation site.
- Verify that the drainage system is in range and properly installed to handle wastewater flow.
- Ensure Surface Compatibility:
- The wall or surface where the handwash unit will be mounted should be sturdy and capable of supporting the product weight including and water the unit will hold.
Step 2: Mounting the Unit
- Mark Mounting Points:
- Hold the handwash unit against the wall or intended surface.
- Use a level to ensure the trough is aligned horizontally.
- Mark the locations for the mounting brackets or fixing holes.
- Ensure the mounting height will suit all potential users and comply with applicable regulations.
- Drill Holes:
- Drill holes at the marked points with a drill suitable for the type of wall (e.g., drywall, brick, concrete).
- Use appropriate anchors or plugs for the wall material.
- Install Mounting Brackets (if applicable):
- Attach the mounting brackets, supports or fixings to the wall using screws and anchors.
- Ensure the brackets are securely fastened and level.
- Attach the Handwash Unit:
- It may be easier to fit any taps and waste fitting to the unit before the unit is fitted to the brackets or wall.
- Once the brackets are installed, lift the handwash unit into place and secure it to the wall or brackets.
- If the handwash unit has keyhole fixing points install the unit onto the screws and make sure the unit sits down onto the screws. Fit the extra screws to prevent the unit being lifted off of the keyhole fixing points.
- Tighten any screws or bolts to ensure stability.
Step 3: Connecting Plumbing
- Water Supply Connection:
- Connect the cold and hot water supply lines to the inlets on the taps using plumbing fittings.
- Apply plumber's tape or pipe thread sealant to threaded connections if required to prevent leaks.
- Tighten the connections with an adjustable pipe spanner.
- Consult local regulations to ascertain if isolation valves, check stop strainer valves or any other fittings are required between the water supply and appliance.
- Drainage Connection:
- Install an appropriate waste water trap to prevent smells and comply with regulations.
- Attach the waste outlet of the water trap to the drainage system or pipe.
- Ensure the drain connection is secure and properly aligned to prevent leaks.
- Check for Leaks:
- Turn on the water supply and test all connections for leaks.
- If any leaks are found, tighten the connections and ensure the leak is fixed.
Step 4: Final Adjustments
- Seal the Edges (Optional):
- Apply a bead of silicone sealant around the edge of the handwash unit, where it meets the wall or counter, to prevent water seepage.
- Test the Installation:
- Ensure the unit and taps all function as expected.
- Ensure there are no leaks and the water runs smoothly through the whole system.
- Check Alignment:
- Use a level to ensure the handwash unit remains aligned and stable after water is running.
Step 5: Cleaning and Maintenance
- Initial Cleaning:
- Clean the handwash unit using mild soap and water to remove any debris or dust from installation.
- We do not recommend the use of any chemical cleaning agents.
- Failure to properly clean stainless steel items after installation to remove all installation debris will result in the stainless steel going brown around the debris stuck to the surface.
- Routine Maintenance:
- Regularly check for leaks or water flow issues.
- Inspect the drain for blockages and clear as needed.
- Regularly clean the handwash unit and check for signs of wear and tear.
Conclusion
By following these installation steps, you can ensure a secure, functional handwash unit setup for any commercial or industrial application. Always follow local regulations and safety standards for plumbing and installation.
